3rd Grade SSM Music

INTRODUCTION TO THE ELEMENTS OF MUSIC:

In third grade, students are introduced to certain elements of music. There are several individual elements of music and each element makes it's contribution to the whole of the musical work. One of the third graders neatly re-defined the elements of music as the following, " It's the stuff music is made of".  

INTRODUCTION TO FORM:

Third graders are currently studying an element of music called "form". Form is the overall organizational pattern that composers use to organize, develop, and arrange thier musical ideas. Although composers may organize thier musical ideas any way they would like to, there are certain forms that have been used so promenantly throughout the history of western music that specific names were assigned to specific patterns. SSM 3rd grade music students have been developing an increasingly sophistocated understanding of the following forms:

Binary Form: AABB

Ternary Form: ABA

5 Part Rondo: ABACA

7 Part Rondo: ABACADA
